Plans for a smart Mauritius

17 December 2025, Wednesday

The recent launch of Medine Smart City, at the beginning of September, was symbolic of the work implemented to create a ‘modern country’ that has been envisioned by the Mauritius government. Médine Ltd is behind this new city development, and known for owning more than 10,000 hectares of land; their core work expands into agriculture, leisure, property development and education.

At the launch of this new city, the Honourable Prime Minister Pravind Kumar Jugnauth acknowledged the work implemented to transform Mauritius into a smart country, and further shared the government’s goal of creating a better-quality life for Mauritian residents.

As it stands, there are approximately 2500 foreign students already studying in Mauritius, Education Village of Médine has been designed to attract more foreign students. Creating smart cities such as these, the Mauritius government is aiming to double the number of students by 2020.

The Médine Smart City will consist of an education cluster as well, which will have a university campus, private pre-primary, primary and secondary schools. This huge MUR35 billion project, is also set to provide student housing, business office blocks, a hospital, bus terminal, courthouse, sports complex, art centre, solar farm, green park, shopping mall and residential units.

While this is an exciting era for Mauritius, this city is going to be developed over 25 years, with the first phase in motion now. The next phases are expected to roll out around 2023 and 2030. We look forward to seeing how this smart city evolves.
