The diversification of the Mauritius economy

18 December 2025, Thursday

Mauritius has come a long way as a country, and is leading as an example for Africa, as it continues to rank at the top economically and build on the existing successes each year. The innovative Mauritius economy we know today, started from a mono-crop economy in the 70’s, that has slowly built up its sectors as the years have passed.

Following from the successes of the mono-crop economy, Mauritius started focusing on the Industrial sectors in the early 70’s. Leading from the successes of the Industrial sector, just before the 80’s, Mauritius focused on the introduction of services, like import and exports, real estate and hospitality. By the 90’s Mauritius had evolved to include innovative driven sectors such as technology and communication.

Mauritius is now spearheading innovation in the African economy. The diversification of the Mauritius economy can attribute its success to sectors like manufacturing, which contributes 16.9% to the economy, Real Estate and Property Development weighing in with 13.4%, and Wholesale and Retail delivering on 12% of the economy.

There is no doubt that Mauritius will reach a high income economy by 2020; making it an extremely attractive and secure economy for South Africans to invest in.
